2022 ‘Once Upon A Time In Baiwan’ Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who supported the annual Sunbeam fundraiser, which took place Saturday, October 15th 2022 at the China Club, in central Hong Kong.

Our theme took us back to the 90's, when our founders travelled to Baiwan, China, with a view to establishing a refuge for the area's most vulnerable children. As such, the Sunbeam Children’s Village was born!

As our first in-person fundraiser for over 3 years, we were overwhelmed by the support we received for the event. Attended by over 100 guests, many of whom were new to Sunbeam, the evening included an exceptional dinner, flowing drinks, dancing, a live and silent auction, pledging and a prize draw.

We raised over $650,000 for the event, which given the current environment and the challenges it holds for fundraising, gives us a great deal of hope for the future!

2021 Virtual Gala

“Light Up Lives” was the theme for our 2021 Virtual Gala, a theme carefully selected for its fun and unique nature, but with a special meaning that embodies the work of the Sunbeam Children’s Foundation. The virtual format enabled us with the opportunity to widen our guest list, both in Hong Kong and internationally, as it allowed for an unlimited capacity of attendees.

The annual fundraising gala is Sunbeam Children’s Foundation’s most important fundraising event of the year, historically raising more than 25% of the Foundation’s annual operating costs needed to care for the children in the Sunbeam Children’s Village in Baiwan. In 2021 the gala fundraising goal was HK$1.5 million (around 37% of annual operating costs) - which we were able to exceed! Thank you to everyone who participated, donated and supported this very successful event.

‘Stories From SUNBEAM’ book - available to purchase

Created and sponsored by Sunbeam past Chair Dorothy Wong, her husband Buddy and son David, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of The Sunbeam Children's Foundation, Stories From Sunbeam shares the heart-warming tales of the people - Board members, staff and residents - who have made Sunbeam what it is today.

On Thursday 24th June 2021, Dorothy organised and hosted the inaugural launch of the book at the Helena May in Hong Kong, supported by long time Sunbeam members May Chan, Selina Lau, Clara Ng and Sunbeam supporters Angela Ho and Jenny Tsun. The book launch was tailored for guests new to Sunbeam as an introduction to the foundation, with some of Sunbeam's loyal patrons also present. The book launch was held in two sessions, due to Covid restrictions, each one welcoming 20 guests and overall proving to be a resounding success.

Guests were treated to a delicious selection of canapés, wine and soft drinks. Dorothy shared a few words surrounding the inspirational Sunbeam story, with those present. We’d like to thank Dorothy for her generosity, as well as all those who attended and those who bought copies of the book.

For those wishing to purchase the book, please click this link

Rebecca Boss - Half Marathon October 2020 Fundraising Result!

Co-Chair of Sunbeam Children’s Foundation, Rebecca Boss, ran a half marathon in Hong Kong on 31st October 2020 to help raise funds for the Sunbeam Children’s Village in Baiwan, China.

I had this crazy idea to run a half marathon in support of Sunbeam Children’s Foundation. The aim was to raise HK$35000 which would support one child for one year.

On Saturday 31st October 2020, I completed the run with an amazing support crew including friends and their kids, a couple of my students and photographers Chincia and Carolyn.

So far we have raised over HK$50,000 and donations are still coming in! This is really beyond my expectations and I want to thank all the wonderful friends of Sunbeam who donated and supported me and this wonderful charity. It is truly an honour to be part of Sunbeam Children’s Foundation. Same time next year?
— Bec Boss

If you would like to sponsor a child on a regular basis we are very appreciative of monthly sponsorships and invite you to start a recurring plan.  You will receive regular updates regarding your sponsored child and once travel restrictions are enabled, you are most welcome to visit the Sunbeam Children's Village in Baiwan, China to meet your sponsored child.

Sunbeam’s 20-Year Celebration

November 21st 2020

Our fundraising event must be cancelled, but you can still help!

Dear Friends of Sunbeam,

In order to meet social distancing requirements, we are very sad to inform you that we are unable to hold our annual fundraising event as planned. Due to limited numbers, we would have to disappoint almost half of our sponsors and invited guests. We are truly sorry that we have to cancel this event after so much anticipation and planning. We have already had to postpone it three times, and there is no guarantee we could definitely go ahead in November, even observing all the social distancing regulations.

As our annual gala events are our major source of income each year, we have now lost our opportunity to hold these events for the last two consecutive years. This means our annual income has been drastically reduced. We would be sincerely grateful if you would consider your sponsorship / support as a donation to Sunbeam, to help us over this very difficult period.

A commemorative booklet and Swarovski pen will be sent to all intended guests. Thank you for your understanding.

Stay well, stay safe.

Yours sincerely,

 Dorothy Wong and May Chan

Sunbeam Children’s Foundation Ltd.

Carnival in Rio

Sunbeam’s annual fundraising event “Carnival In Rio” was held on November 21st at the Hong Kong Bankers Club.  The event raised over HK$800,000, and this will help to fund our operations in The Sunbeam Children Village, and enable us to extend our services further to reach needy children in Baiwan.

Special thanks to our Sponsors, donors and supporters for their amazing generosity.

The evening included Brazilian cuisine, a performance by members of Capoeira Brazil Hong Kong, which included Capoeira martial arts, drumming and the samba.

We are grateful to vocalist Yana Fortep, The Sunbeam Sisters, and Andy Bautista’s band, for their wonderful performances. We are also grateful to our auctioneer Craig Shute, and our MC, Colin Bennett for helping the evening to go so well.

Great Gatsby Night

Our dancing volunteers perform the Charleston during a successful fundraising evening

Our 2014 Gala Fundraiser took place on Saturday, November 15th at the Hong Kong Bankers Club in Central. The theme of the evening was The Great Gatsby, and our guests joined in the spirit of the glitz and glamour of the roaring 1920’s.

The evening included live music of the era played by Andy Bautista’s Band, while our vocalist Sonya Gerber gave a wonderful performance accompanied by the band. We also had a best-dressed competition, raffle and auction.

Another highlight of the evening was a monologue from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale, vibrantly delivered by Stephen Bolton, and immediately followed by our wonderful volunteer Sunbeam dancers led by Elissa Hinson who performed a lively rendition of the Charleston.

Charles Kelly did a great job as our MC, while our auctioneer Craig Shute delivered an exciting auction. We raised over HK$900,000 for our children, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

A Night in New Orleans

Sunbeam children and volunteers joined in for a fun night of music and merrymaking

Sunbeam's 2013 Gala Fundraiser, A Night in New Orleans, was a fun, colourful, high-energy event.

Colin Jesse once again did a great job as our MC, while live jazz music was provided by Andy's Bautista's Dixie Band and the Cheesy Trio. Meanwhile, surprise magician wowed the crowd with an array of illusions.

The Cajun food was enjoyed by all, and the real stars were our Mardi Gras Parade girls, who managed to get most guests onto their feet for a conga line and dancing.

Hong Kong Hardwood Classic

Over 100 volunteers participated in the charity basketball showdown in support of Sunbeam

It was a first for Hong Kong’s booming real estate industry and a first for Sunbeam – an intra-industry basketball tournament that sought to raise money for everyone’s favourite organisation in Baiwan.

In the November 2012 event, eight teams, four developers and four property consultants, vied for bragging rights amongst property professionals to win the first annual Hardwood Classic.

With over 100 participants and volunteers, the tournament was a resounding success, and will undoubtedly continue in the coming years. The field included teams from Hong Kong Land,Swire, Sino, Hysan, Jones Lang La Salle, Colliers, Savills, and CBRE.

When it was all said and done, Sino took home the coveted “Chopping Block” trophy and will be the first to add its name to the list as Hardwood Classic Champion.

Thanks again to all of the participants, and most importantly, the volunteers who spent the entire day to ensure that the event went off without a hitch!

Music in the Air

Music filled the air high up on the 27th floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel

Our 2012 Gala Fundraiser, Music in the Air, was a big success. Guests, volunteers and friends enjoyed a music-filled evening in the magical setting of The Pavilion, high up on the 27th floor of The Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Everyone enjoyed a barbecue buffet dinner, while bubbles and wine flowed freely courtesy of Leung Yick Company Ltd. We also held an auction of fine wines donated by Marguerite Lee, in loving memory of her late husband, Dr. Henry Lee, from his collection.

Colin Jesse was our MC and auctioneer for the evening, and a lucky draw determined the night's raffle winners. Andy Bautista and his band played during the evening, and we were also entertained by The Sunbeam Sisters, The Cheesy Trio, Robert Vicencio and Anders Nellson, who made a surprise guest appearance, much to the enjoyment of the crowd.
